[Music] you hello everyone today I'm here in a very special place every other week farmers come to this place this place part is part of the city of fat yet the mayorship of fat here runs this place and farmers they show up here and they exchange seeds with each other ok and these seeds they own it the farmers own it this movement has started in Turkey2/20
about 10 15 years ago it has been gaining a lot of momentum and I'm gonna be interviewing I would say I will be discussing chatting with talking with a group of amazing ladies they are part of a social democratic party here in fethiye they support other Turks principles they are activists and you're gonna see some of them are engineers some of them are retired medical doctors3/20
and they have been getting this movement moving forward and nothing has stopped these ladies so they are amazing so I'm gonna be talking with them one of the things that I have found out if in 2006 they passed the law here in Turkey trying to illegal eyes this meaning the seeds being owned by the farmers people freely exchanging seeds and that is supposedly just like elsewhere4/20
in the world was as a result of all the lobbying for those mega international corporations we know the names of some of those let's say let's think monsanto but they they are awake people in Turkey are awake and things basically what they are saying is hell with that how with that you may pass the law we are going to violate that law violate that law every5/20
single day in every way we can nobody has gone to jail because they haven't been really really hardcore with this so fit here Aegean region certain part of Marmora see northern Aegean have areas have been some of the most active areas with these seed banking farmers ok farmers not corporations activism against GMO free domestic seeds we're gonna be talking with these ladies and you're gonna have6/20
much more this is one of the areas that I'm extremely interested in and I want to make sure that you know we're gonna be covering some of these controversial issues throughout Turkey and also do the contrast comparison with the United States where I think for some people has become a matter of it's too late because everything is gone everything is owned everything is copyrighted as far7/20
as seeds are concerned little farmers have no voice no choice going up against huge multi billion trillion dollar companies or fight it in court so join me let's talk about seeds GMO free seeds seed banking the seed movement here in fethiye supported by pytheas mayorship join me [Music] ooh mr. lash Monsanto non-payment not Monsanto these corns are not one Santo picking in it they're coming from8/20
the local farmers and they collect them they put and they distribute to the villagers so the villagers are growing this again so they reproduce again and again so it belongs once the villagers guess it it belongs to villagers and the villagers can later collect this and replanted again this is this is this is amazing this is good because I've heard that almost 90% of corn in9/20
turkey is now has the GMO and Monsanto stamp on it is that correct yes unfortunately is correct but now we are creating cultural awareness here social awareness and we are trying to motivate people to produce more specialty farmers we start with farmers and if you start with it and we support them we can take it back [Music] god I love you I mean this is such10/20
a beautiful thing to see this this gives me hope is one of those things my news organization usually covers grim sad stuff things that are too late but once in a while when I see positive things like this it makes me want to cry from joy and happiness I see some students here is this also does this also include raising awareness yeah this is just natural11/20
it's all natural I'm gonna get some of your lavender soaps for sure make sure I want to make sure I and the students are making this and you're these students do they also know about the seeds and this movement as well here it certainly is a beautiful circle how did you become activists in this what made you do this what made you start this image people12/20
produce their stuff and in good price that's right because in some other areas in the US for example in all the places California or again only rich people can go to organic farmers market because if you get let's say this orange or Apple from this supermarket that's something like me grows for $2 in organic market they sell you for $8 so it has become something that13/20
only elites can enjoy and they have a still middleman but when I go to the farmers market in Turkey if in the supermarket is $2 in farmers market is 10 cents it's better quality and it's cheaper I mean a little bit problematic so we should create awareness for the I mean in marketing area if you create more awareness they can get more money and they can14/20
sustain their life better otherwise they need to choose chemicals and other easy ways to produce things if you don't support them I mean this organization is supporting the people the farmers sustain their life that's beautiful yes this is what we should be seeing everywhere and this is in front of the city of Phet here the mayor here supports this but I heard that the general National15/20
Law is trying to put a little bit of control over the seeds but people locally they say we're gonna do this but you can do this you can raise awareness nobody throws you into jail do they throw you to jail dude are you afraid to do this okay okay so we are here in Turkey Republic of Turkey the law tries to prevent these organic farmers only16/20
seed movement okay with laws on the other hand you go all over Turkey local areas here we are in city of Fatih a throughout the Aegean region people say no that's wrong we're gonna do this because this is right this is healthy this is for sustainability and they are free to talk about it they are free to do this they are free to implement this we're17/20
gonna be talking about this and get a little bit deeper in this issue with these amazing ladies here who have been doing this for years in fact here and they are also networking with other activist groups throughout Turkey it's not limited only here in fact here this is the awakening this is an amazingly positive beautiful movement throughout Turkey that I'm supporting as a media organization okay18/20
and I'm hoping that the other media organizations in Turkey that they are supporting you they are basically covering and they are raising the awareness we hope that more of us do this and together united we have power but we are in Turkey people the ones that they are saying is autocratic and dictatorship this is something we can't really do in many places in the United States19/20
with all the legalese attached with all the copyrights attached here in Turkey here are the Turkish people they are doing it and they are doing it without fear hey take a medium or Chagas on your true Oh sir Tomas I slaughter who knock those [Music] conditions we never could've imagined this oh your marijuana heart you are conveying your chair give my girls like a change your
