During periods of humanitarian crises, like the one we see currently in Syria, several key issues come to light. Some of these issues were presented in our Syria under siege report. Many people have been trying to divert attention away from the very concerning behavior and actions documented in our report. One of the several issues that has been ignored has become a new phenomenon on social media, which2/9
is actually adding fuel to the fire. Taking a page out of the see something, say something doctrine from Homeland Security. People are being encouraged to report journalists as terrorists to the government. No, this is not coming from the mainstream media. This is being stated by those who claim to be independent or an alternative to the mainstream media. As seen in this tweet here, from someone who3/9
claims to be an activist and a journalist, calling on people and the UK government to jail journalists, even providing a link for people to report these journalists as terrorists to the government. This is a shocking escalation and poses a serious threat to freedom of the press and to free speech and should concern everyone, including all journalists around the world regardless of their ideological or political beliefs4/9
or biases. Calling people to function as snitches against journalists and report journalists to governments under terrorism laws. I have to say this is a very dangerous new phenomenon. I've never seen any journalists, including mainstream media reporters, engage in this kind of assault on alternative media, freedom of speech and journalism, never. How can any platform, especially those who claim to be pro-independent reporting, condone and support such5/9
or well-earned operation by two social media tabloid reporters? It is newsboard's responsibility to expose these operatives and ask people to resist such or well-earned propaganda perpetuated online. Another key issue highlighted in our report are the attacks by these same people against doctors who have been on the ground trying to help people in these war zones. Medical neutrality by definition refers to a principle of non-interference with6/9
medical services in times of armed conflict and civil unrest. Physicians must be allowed to care for, the sick and wounded, and soldiers must receive care regardless of their political affiliations. All parties must refrain from attacking and misusing medical facilities, transport and personnel. Concepts comprising the principles of medical neutrality derive from international human rights law, medical ethics and humanitarian law. Medical neutrality may be thought of as7/9
a kind of social contract that obligates societies to protect medical personnel in both times of war and peace. And obligates medical personnel to treat all individuals regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or political affiliation. Violations of medical neutrality constitute crimes outlined in the Geneva Convention. As emphasized in our original report, calling international medical volunteers, majority of their doctors, terrorists, is a dangerous and life-threatening assault on humanity.8/9
This type of false accusations launched publicly against these selfless doctors and medics is an assault on human decency. These actions are meant to deepen the humanitarian crisis in Syria. Regardless of anyone's political beliefs or which side people sympathize with on any war, attacks against journalists and doctors must never be accepted by society and we strongly caution all of our viewers away from sites who provide platforms
