learn okay afternoon everybody if we start with an apology and a goldfish an apology for having the most boring CZ in your little booklets my only apologies I'm a professor of computer science we hire people because they have long and boring CV okay also working engineering faculty and medical fission I wondered about doing this I don't like tech talks or else most of them these I
think most of them half a bit superficial message healthy if we all do good for one another to will to be a great place son of ninety if the students would say that's what we talk and we don't do the talking my group but then I thought Hey maybe the best way to change that is to do my own tech talk and then we'll see about
that's a lot talk a little bit about open learning and the work we do on learning analytics and that's was mentioned in the introduction after momentary sees crisis meeting which is talking I think at the moment horror of the Flemish government Tom to reform of secondary education and I think it's great that this is getting to work crises for dinner government because I think education has
been the crisis for a long time already and the best way to illustrate that I think is that for most five six seven year olds learning funny if you ask a six year old shall we learn to get our help to build something that has a very positive connotation for every sixteen year old if you say let's go learn something that has a very negative connotation
change that okay here's and I'm trying to change a little bit but the steam higher education where a lot of the learning is moving online and you see some of the schools but very little and way too slow okay and one of the consequences of moving learning online is that it becomes more open you know on the internet to formation wants to be free on the
internet learning wants to be open and this is really a movement type tests gathered a lot of peace since the marathon last few year it's last year especially nineteenth maybe some of you may be familiar with this notion of moves massive open online courses it basically means that you can join my course I scan tool billion other people who are connected to each you don't have
to register at Kahler them you don't have to ask anyone's permission you just need to know the hashtag and of course I'm not alone doing this this is what we do written big international gruel and of people that do similar games and maybe the thing that's most widely known at the moment is a number of spin offs that have grown out of it one that is
very popular now he sees score Sarah and speedo from from Stanford and I got a mail from them mature yesterday that set up there computer science course yes one on one just registered three hundred thousand same classificados in my university we have probably about five hundred students that means that we need to teach this class for six hundred years seeing all of you so that different
right how I don't teach to three hundred thousand you okay I'm not tapped alright we don't get a big number of our online but we do get three thousand I do regularly teach moves for tree tavern four thousand students zero of rage pay registration not cater to in fact I suspect that very few of them half finished parents who pay taxes that pretty much sellers so
the problem I don't know I don't think so I don't think it's my problem in any okay and so what I do in my students and you know other people again other people do very similar thing is he just going to open environments you very old fashioned technology I give him a week to Ricky's empty and I say you know we keep organizers and you know
what happens when you give people responsibility for their own organization very funny they start acting responsibly because they have the responsibility and so my students organize themselves in small groups and then they do stuff online and then we work on real serious problems like %HESITATION %HESITATION building applications that you read easier now storing the Google app store or the iTunes app store I mean that's real
people you send a tweet about that to share their intermediate results as I said they work on really important problems so a few weeks ago one of them perhaps that helps you to find a place for you to use the best place to bell to bite Belgian fries no and he lives in like really important problems nine that are really for the students so next time
you come to live from that road suite bluefin few want to you can go to YouTube now and have as much a video that takes me works and so it's working on authentic problems in an open environment where we replace sake learning where students who are calm silly problems and have been an assignment that's maybe a teacher read or maybe he doesn't every replace that Bible
open communication on the wet everything my students do everything I can see you can see two and affect your regular did get a lot of mental blocks that relate regularly get people from the outside to comment about this do any changes everything about the dynamic in the classroom because now they work which real people not to eat meat people like you what real people who would
use an application like street there I also spoke doing exams indoors courses I think if I have one suggestion for policy makers it would be just for a bit exams to make people think about what they are trying to do in class exam should be I think originally were intended to be I mean still just double check have you off if you are in my class
have you all roughly learn quickly works of learning discourse because then we can move on so it's a little exam you know find out that's a means it's not a goal now for pope my colleagues and many of my students it's become their goal to it's ridiculous and then you get questions like this is part of what we need to know for the exam now we
see that's another question I can't answer the real question is is this interesting should I know this because I should note it's not because I need to so we've replaced exams and last semester we experimented quite a lot with a system that topic people well it's an open batch system and the multilateral geisha he's behind this initiative and basically as you take part in my class
and as you demonstrate that you acquire certain skills are certain amount knowledge you acquired little badges that you can put you know virtual backpack and at the end of the course I just look at your backpacking though when you've got a lot of matches scouting bright so no you get a high grade you have no batches of all actually the intent is that everybody gets a
lot of craft people don't regularly fail my courses but I teach that we do work very hard the other thing we do ask people working these classes if we try to capture their digital exalts what that means every time a Cleveland something every time they send a message every time date goals the blow folks every time to comment on other ones locals Everytime divides cooled after
engineering students write today write software code I we captured at every time they need when they release the up every time it's now vote between people evaluate each week Tara looked at and we get a lot of data about to students it's not really big big data it's more like small data because the numbers are not that big but it's still a fairly detailed picture of
what students do and you can look at it like can be swayed which allows me to figure out how students are doing get help for what where every line is a student in every columnist I sure am this is but a small subset and your ideas referring again to quantify itself has a new introduction be Aidid's capture a lot of development he's a piece of tissue
and we want to push this really really really far at the moment we're doing a lot of you know the stuff they do digitally Buttrick thinking about wiring the students up giving them sensors on measuring stuff they do and for those of you who work in higher education may be familiar with things like a learning manage Tim over virtual learning environment you maintain call yeah he's
capturing evicting day doing doesn't black oratory moved a large amount of gold seized but that's one of my colleagues have elected a particle from my still be slide and would say that's just the tip of the iceberg very little of development activities of the student go on in the learning management it's like very little learning goes on in the classroom if you want to get a
real picture of what is really happening in their heads you should go beyond but using the learning management now we're not the only ones doing that and some people do that as well in daily use that data to steer just you wouldn't speak screen capture from across Iraq cores and I think that's kind of an interesting thing to do but I think it's also very dangerous
I think it's kind of interesting because it really works well in a cart syrup course where you may half as I just said three hundred thousand students or even only thirty thousand student to laugh number starts to play that means that whatever you do as a student we have very similar students to compare you to and we tend to the recommendation tree we can do what
is called educational data mining I think about you a little bit like he hers she runs and when she did news so that didn't work so well but when he did that that's worked very well so will tell you to do to see and you can actually build systems now uses you know my area of research we can build systems up to automatically guide you student
and it will tell you every ten or fifteen minutes what you should do and the systems work if you have large numbers of students very well my claim is still better than the average not a school there better but they're also dangerous being back you because if you teach children is that way students who graduate and I think we can make them graduate you two years
slot in five years as we do now for my students and I think I can reach the same level with that number of students but the problem is don't students who get out of university and be yours to a piece of software but tells them if you feel in minutes you should know did I just I do it disappears do we not in a very good
way but it isn't giving students these things that you typically talk about us twenty first centuries it isn't telling them how to be creative communicative cooperative C. skills right so we don't do any of that data mining in my group and the people that we work great we try to do a slightly different thing it's almost the same it's a little bit different we gathered a
daytime we don't try to process them in a way that the software can make the decisions for you Roger we try to build dashboards that help you as a student to make a decision yourself and we do about using participatory design approaches so this is it that's what actually got to students designed for their own benefit using the data about their own interaction it all gets
very reflective Carson is something that you really like you science right so the students develop a young their own applications dot support their learning efforts and it's very much like a Dutch working to carve yeah he's very much and it's a little bit subtle the idea I can be space it's a mobile app from time to time you look at it and on the bottom park
it tells you how good you are doing as a student their arrogance straight up during the middle of the pack if it's very your move way ahead of everybody else if the student here was liking behind a little bit and then it tells you also how to act on today she uses a lot of soul social media in my course and you have pointers they're talking
to students can do now compare that with what the students see in their official learning management sees this is what most of the students see most of the packing of cater to does this tell the student what to do but the option sour note the tells him here's a list of courses that's why I think learning management systems must die in fact I think you're already
dead we're just not acknowledging and I say goodbye to a us someone who we don't use the systems that cage uniform electric ten or twelve years now there's other approaches such colleagues feelings that I think are also very interesting a much more visual approach is something to using how long lonely nights trailing off and quit date sort of represented communication between the students and you can
you've got to figure out which students need to better support to be more collaborative we don't risk unions well here's another example that I used in my class to just show that you not only can do is for very clunky that the stuff you can also duties for more emotional stuff so maybe space we did sentiment analysis on top of the messages in the clouds and
you see how roughly speaking with the move into classical from reg which is very much associate to treat purity of feeding off I can ever to grace to bring the feeding of mastery yes we did it built the sap yes Moonies being people are using so for me this is a pretty you know pretty good picture for my clients although I do with understand that the
students are little bit disoriented and worried in the beginning we don't only don't using digital environments this is something called the team goes unreported picnic are doing integrating some of this learning analytics physical I'm environment in this case is a very simple idea of the co lead stuff you see in front of every person I think of the source for students working together on assignment the
more you talk to more let slide up and so it gives you Roger maybe not so very subtle but try to clear feedback about how much you are talking an effective speech some study someone did a PGM is there some studies that this helps you to regulate your behavior if you've been talking all the time and your classmates have I had a chance say anything Albion
let slide open you will have a tendency do you know slow down a bit okay obviously I think this whole notion of quantified self related approaches to learning analytics is only to starting as we have the sway of both wearable computing that's coming towards us with Google glass and white shirts and also there's I connected to your buddy as we start right away also experimenting with
putting helmets on your head to measure your brain activity both to number a few points that we can gather aswell as the way that we can feed that back to you to help you navigate your learning just beginning to to explore so I hope we can report on some more stuff little bit later in the meantime if you're interested in this sort of thing we felt
we set up to serve society for learning how research Solara and we do regularly fencing fact I organize the last conference we have our two hundred fifty people who work in this area %HESITATION in live in about a month ago and if you're interested I very much encourage you to get in touch with me are trying so thank you very much
