so it's just like okay let's just have a real calm real coffee and no censorship welcome to another edition of BFP roundtable here on boiling frog post dot com I am James Corbett of corporate report dot com and today we are joined by Sibel Edmonds of course the founder and editor of boiling frog post as well as Guillermo Jimenez of the traces of reality radio show2/156
and podcast at traces of reality dot com agir mo Sibel great to have you to here today to discuss a very interesting and very timely topic that has been making headlines around the alternative media a blogosphere and that is a series of articles that Sibel Edmonds has been posting to boiling frog post dot com examining the Glenn Greenwald slash Pierre Omidyar slash PayPal slash and Izzy3/156
scandal well I don't know Willett's let's put a question mark next that for now and let's start putting on some of the analysis out there on the table so for those of you who have not been following this article series of course we will encourage you to go to boiling frog postdoc on and take a look at these articles starting with the article that came out4/156
on December eighth called checkbook journalism and leaking to the highest bidders in which Sibel started to lay out a case that Glenn Greenwald's reporting on the Edward Snowden affair it may not be what it appears to be and were looking at a number of different angles today and one of them is a an NSA insider source that has %HESITATION indicated to Sibel that apparently %HESITATION there5/156
is PayPal information that was specifically contained in the %HESITATION in the documents in the Snowden documents that were leaked out and that have not been leaked to the general public via going Greenwald who is acting as the leak keeper %HESITATION and this is significant because for those of you who do not know Eglin Greenwald recently formed a new news about media partnership with Pierre Omidyar the6/156
cofounder of eBay and that's one of the top executives at PayPal this is all a very interesting and very incestuous circle and it's %HESITATION it's extremely provocative and is it generated a lot of response from people on both sides of this issue people people are both skeptical of Greenwald and people who are not so let's start getting into some of the %HESITATION they'd via and need7/156
a gritty of this and %HESITATION spelled let's start with yourself %HESITATION first of all if there's anything I mis characterized their in what I said please let us know and as secondly tell us that basically what what it is that you're you're trying to drive at with with his article series well I'm going to try but first I have to make sure I'm trying to speak8/156
out too much laughing or smiling which I usually get in I still have many stitches inside my mouth I had this surgery and so you you'd notice all kind of awkward and now we are features or mimics or whatever here please forgive me I haven't recuperated yet and it's hard not to smile and laugh and I'm with people I really enjoy being with but ugh several9/156
big reasons are major reasons I start with one and that is because the keys deals with a whistleblower and the case from the beginning has been characterized as a whistleblower case and it may very well be I don't know that up wouldn't trust six months up people have contacted me asked me to put forth opinion and %HESITATION and and my stand on Edward Snowden and I10/156
have always characterize the action in terms of the bravery that it takes and takes a lot of they eat everything Israel to obtain these documents because one person believes that at the public %HESITATION is entitled to have this information two that the government is engaged in the galaxies criminality is that they are covering up so for those noble purposes fuel purposes if this person is glass11/156
enough to get those documents to give it to the public and say here it is you need to know what your government is doing okay that absolutely I I support that person I support manning I support anyone who has that much but and who was that I know I don't like the word patriotic but less a peak yachting in terms update he wants to serve his12/156
are you know people use nation but I I I kept saying I don't have enough details to form any making you know conclusive opinion because I'm still looking at this case and the more time started to pass and the more I started reading and the more I started seeing and the more I started hearing are you edicts case became more and more convoluted and you mentioned13/156
those points and that is the fact that all documents were turned over to Glenn Greenwald and and the waitress he well within two months less than two months of that happening each June in August meanwhile signs of what multimillion dollar it's a promise that the publisher that he's going to sit on some of this information and make it exclusive to the book to make it up14/156
past the hour okay and the fact that the other two people who have gotten book deals from Washington post and guardian because they got mobile suit they don't have what he has still he's done and make sure that those documents are not released so the publisher will profit from it and he will deserve millions of dollars on that and then a month later he goes and15/156
this is the man who for decades has been justifiably attacking the corporate media corporate media while the all attack and and he has been very outspoken I'm happily salute at his stand on that suddenly he makes a deal with that corporate man one ER PayPal and eBay Warner Elian air for two hundred fifty million dollars and it is a state in all the interviews that the16/156
only reason I'm here I came to him to Greenwalt half repose this partnership so he would give him two hundred fifty million dollar bonus joint mentorship is that they would meaning only yards new company corporation use corporation would publish some of these documents well suddenly Glenn Greenwald began talking about corporate media is good not passed it was very very bad and now he is a very17/156
very good and and and the U. Pappas your bed and not only that a the fact that none of their their conditions or the contracts for this of joint venture ship is no well that's team now and then the Hollywood studio appeals for millions started leaking doubt and not all along I haven't heard anything from the whistleblower Edward Snowden I have always emphasize through my organization18/156
or whistle blowers as a person as a whistleblower myself that whistleblowers have to be really wary about standing really really you're in terms of don't get partisan because that would ruin your reputation because that's what I'm sort of agenda into your action okay are do not engage with in situations of conflict of interest so I I have been preaching it but I have also been practicing19/156
it myself well in this case this guy Snowden has given land Greenwald all the documents say I leave it up to your judgment to do as you wish well if his purpose to start when it was obtaining those documents the government's calling it stealing yet so that the public will get to know yeah giving it to a person that he has never met before he doesn't20/156
even know personally I think you do as you wish now itself raises eyebrows and outbound state there are at least a dozen of points that raise eyebrows but I want to pause here and I want to start getting specific discussions and questions from welcome you and then we'll get and yell deeper into this alright Guillermo what's what's your thoughts on this any any specific questions you21/156
wanna ask about herb yeah sure will like you know because he said so you raised a lot of really interesting points just now and throughout the series of the articles I really important points and %HESITATION as as you and I discussed earlier James with along with our friends ons like we talked about this a few days ago and we had a discussion about %HESITATION what we22/156
thought about the the the the articles and that the bigger issues regarding Greenwald is is now %HESITATION you know million dollar deal with %HESITATION media are and what that means and as I said in the beginning you know when I first heard about you know Greenwald leaving the guardian and starting up a new media venture at initially I was I was intrigued us okay well this23/156
is interesting perhaps gonna go out independently it wouldn't that be a great a great thing to do wouldn't that wouldn't that be great someone with the with Greenwald's %HESITATION name and what that sort of %HESITATION attraction the brains out could could very well go out and start up a new independent media venture he doesn't really need millions of dollars he's in a position where I if24/156
you went sort of the the route that that BFP has taken say you know a subscription based model are I'd venture to guess against Greenwald and ski hill could round up quite a bit quite a bit of subscribers enough to to make a comfortable living so %HESITATION having said all that you know again initially I I was sort of torn by the by the by the25/156
sort of a story are as I started reading more though asserted learning more about who the spear of media are now is civilizations with PayPal %HESITATION PayPal's %HESITATION role in %HESITATION going after weeks and weeks for example and and that really was the key to me is that okay let's put aside that the issue of money which I'm sure you know when you attach again when26/156
you touch is so many zeros at the end of a check I think that that's enough to change %HESITATION anybody well maybe not anybody but that's enough to change a lot of people are perhaps even someone like a Greenwalt but let's put that aside for the moment and focus on okay we'll look at this guy specifically right Pierre Omidyar are there is of really obvious and27/156
very a clear conflict of interest there right %HESITATION that we know we know for a fact well and I guess in say for a fact we flew him up with a pretty good idea that that PayPal does indeed cooperate with the NSA angry because as abundant as much you said he has no doubts that PayPal does cooperate with the NSA which is something that's worth what28/156
what's grilling him on it if you if that's true S. about pointed out one of her articles and how do you know that how do you have no doubt that that that is the case %HESITATION and if there is no doubt in your mind that that PayPal has cooperated with the NSA and your new boss owns PayPal is that not a conflict of interest and it's29/156
a date at BB correct me if I'm wrong transmissible I have not seen %HESITATION Greenwald say anything to that fact acknowledging the fact that it is a clearly a conflict of interest and what he plans to do about it now if he had addressed it instead of going the route that he did go which we pointed out on the podcast reported resorting to ad hominem and30/156
saying all your crazy lunatic stupid for even pointing this out that I thought was was very telling so %HESITATION yeah I guess that's my my sort of %HESITATION take on this currently is is his were his reaction to me settle live %HESITATION the fact that he won't acknowledge that really clear conflict of interest says a lot %HESITATION ineffective yeah I guess it either really I mean31/156
that is in need the millions of dollars SF I said a couple times on the on the radio show on the podcast that I don't think anything wrong with making money even if it's a lot of money nothing inherently wrong with that but for someone in Greenwald's position %HESITATION he doesn't really again need that too to move forward with his career he's got you know again32/156
the the Clinton treatment all brand firmly %HESITATION built in firmly intact so I'm I don't know what you guys in the think about how to say about that I mean like I guess again he I I think he you know he didn't need this abides she should have turned it down could have turned it down what you guys think I personally I would say that I33/156
find it %HESITATION eh somewhat disturbing as you say I'm the the amount of money that's involved in this I'd I can't imagine what ski hill and Greenwald in portraits and friends need with a quarter of a billion already sick and that's at a just a staggering sum of money almost a mind blowing amount of money for adventure like this so I again I can't even imagine34/156
why they would think they would need that much for for what they're doing but then again we don't know what they're doing yet at this point so we'll see what kind of %HESITATION pseudo mainstream type of outlet they're going to come out with to try to compete with I guess the New York times I don't know what you're really thinking they're going to do well on35/156
that aside here's a specific question that I wanted to ask the bell obviously I I understand you can't give away that the source that you use for your for your original article on the summiteers PayPal court caught a corporation said to be implicated in withheld NSA documents but you did characterize that source as a retired and is the official and I eat to the side to36/156
this day I still wonder I and I don't understand how a retired and this the official could have any indication what is in these Snowden documents even as the official line is the the NSA still doesn't even know exactly what Snowden got his hands on that's what they're officially saying anyway so so how does he know this how do how can we know that here I37/156
am has this information in the first place that's a ballot that's a valid question before I answer that question one other thing that you were talking about the heat how is also a review waltz my being and twisting and giving some rarely no answer answer on why doing this deal he said I'm doing it because we need attorneys many editors and we need to have an38/156
establishment in order to publish these documents while he had all that with guardian guardian has dozens of the Chinese a Greenwald was making high six figures regarding this place was not that he was making peanuts and it was an establishment last week was outside the United States now I still consider guardian establishment outlet so to the fact that he's giving us you think because I needed39/156
that to publish this that's not true again that is one thing that is being twice that he had all that and guardian they said they it was unexpected they were very surprised and they were very %HESITATION upset that this is the place they wish them good luck now back to your question the NSA of sorts that I have and I have to delete the name of40/156
the division he worked where it then he was that what the NSA and also he's in touch with many other NSA people still this person is not a whistleblower E. comfortably retired however he knows based on the contract warrants because this boils down to some Stoppard division within the NSA and it has a specific name there's the division that had the contract with the place where41/156
he was working therefore he knows that type of data and and the system those contractors and that particular company would have had access with people with the high level clearance and based on that he knows that also that that's the vision and that particular section contains also stop financial information that NSA has been gathering from not only pay path but from other credit card companies run42/156
banks not only international but also domestic transaction and he gave me this is another point with the number of documents each was eight thousand documents that it became twelve thousand after that it was now fifty thousand everybody's talking about fifty thousand then the NSA comes and says this chore million documents nobody knows how many documents and the story keeps changing as far as the documents are43/156
concerned another %HESITATION inconsistent and also not twisted answers that Greenwald has been saying %HESITATION and twenty four he started and there are several interviews you have documented that other people have documented that then we will set he spends so much time he being Snowden am I think everything he gather you next time he categorize them you Becky called mother after so wait all ends so eat44/156
me were shot how he had every single page okay you're talking about ends up thousands of documents later the same man Greenwald came as that we still don't know what's in those documents okay there's so much it's going to take years for us to know what is what they desire I mean once you start getting into it and get all that information or maybe it's the45/156
formation that Glenn Greenwald has the out there putting them side by side even matter of six months then you go something is seriously wrong here well I agree that there is that the more you dig into this and more the you dig into the statements that have been made about the documents the way they've been handled the way that they're being a distributed I'm there aren't46/156
so many contradictions that side that don't become apparent until you start trying to sort through all these different statements that have been made at different times so it's difficult to even know what the official word on this is at any given time but %HESITATION just another connection to add to this mix that I I I I I I found recently that really I think I am47/156
has it it really settled in my mind one way or another is that not only of course is a midi are directly connected to PayPal being the co founder of eBay and the largest shareholder in eBay and sitting as the chair of the bay the parent company of PayPal %HESITATION but also there is someone who is on the %HESITATION eh down the OBD our network which48/156
is of course the media arts organization %HESITATION Salvador again Yankel is also I it turns out a board member of Booz Allen Hamilton the former employer of Edward Snowden um which is a pretty startling connection for the man who just paid two hundred fifty million dollars to start a new I. newsgathering venture with the man who's supposedly reporting on Snowden's leaks and again I haven't heard49/156
a peep out of glowing Greenwald about this connection about they add that the implications of this he has of course given some sort of kind of blanket denial that side that there's anything wrong with partnering with this billionaire and that this man is a wonderful virtuous us civil liberties crusader but he hasn't addressed in specifics via the PayPal connection and %HESITATION that the other connections to50/156
Booz Allen Hamilton for example on the %HESITATION meeting our network which again to my mind I can't understand how anyone could see this and not be concerned about this and how the public could not at the very least hold Greenwald's feet to the fire over this and demand more transparency over what documents he has and what truck timeframe for release we're looking at here because as51/156
%HESITATION guy John Young crypto dot org posted on last month at the current rate of release it will take forty two years to release all of the documents assuming there's only fifty thousand of them let alone the two million of them or whatever they claim to have now so again add there so many different parts points to go here on here I'm Guillermo anything you wanted52/156
to add at this point yes he said ships really are a lot of different points that we could focus on I have a couple of things that that that %HESITATION as you guys were talking and found interesting where the %HESITATION of sort of la expanding on but the one thing that that we have been talking back and forth about recently has been the strategy involved whether53/156
whether Greenwald should have dumped it all of wikileaks thou that the snow introvert documents are whether or not his rationale for withholding some of the documents was legitimate %HESITATION where as saying you know that you know I've legal reasons for why I'm doing it the way I'm doing it I have there's there's privacy concerns %HESITATION it that that of the documents may contain information that's that54/156
sensitive they may contain at individuals private eye internet history or something like that are put Sebadoh raise the issue which I found I I found compelling which is a yeah we've heard that Snowden %HESITATION was meticulous in his filing and is documenting its cataloguing of these documents so if that's true then one would think anyway that %HESITATION he would have made sure that there was nothing55/156
like that that he was you know handing over to green want to begin with so if that history of stone once so meticulous in and really was really careful about what he up you know I put together then there's wouldn't there shouldn't be any concern %HESITATION legal or otherwise about just releasing all the documents already so that's one thing that I wanted throughout their %HESITATION I56/156
also I wanted to address the the criticisms that %HESITATION usable have been receiving %HESITATION overheard that the series of articles that you bring about Greenwald of one of the criticisms that I but I've seen online I've seen at and on Twitter involved in that sort of stuff %HESITATION people accuse you of of %HESITATION carrying the NSA's water of of taking of the public's eyes off the57/156
prize of focusing on Greenwald and Snowden rather than the and I say and what they're doing other surveillance %HESITATION so mean I could probably even now I mean I I I could answer my own question but I wanna let's I'll let you answer that are as far as of what you would say to those people are who are who are you know saying that this is
