for everyone I'm Spiro here with a special announcement from news but we are very excited to announce news but has produced our first documentary film titled general macarthur's conspiracy to start a war with China NPI believe it will try to limit the larger Korea lecturer that the precious lives of our fighting men are not wasted district that a third world wall said in effect I was2/31
a long long nothing could be further from the through and I'm a man that's how my partner policy Perkins to relieve general macarthur so that there would be no doubt or confusion to the rail part policy mmhm out to talk about this or not to talk about it to other people off the ship nor among ourselves n't would be subject of all fines and imprisonment if3/31
we did not abide by those I will man in his right mind would advocate sending our ground forces into China dominate see and they are all every Asiatic walk I do have washed down Singapore one of the most important joining me to tell us more about this wrote narrated directed Sir of news buds China watch Peter welcome and congratulations on fantastic documentary film this film contains4/31
a bit of everything from secret missions to espionage and a massive conspiracy to start a war in your own words Peter can you tell us about the topic of your documentary yeah thank Spiro of the topic of the documentary is a secret a mission that was put together by Douglas McArthur at the height of the Korean War in an effort to spark a wider war between5/31
the United States and China that macarthur was dissatisfied with the military operations being restricted to the Korean peninsula and you decided to do something about it so what inspired you to produce this documentary Peter that's a good good question Spiro I was researching a piece I was doing for news but on the origins of the Korean War and while I was doing that I was looking6/31
into the relief of Douglas McArthur he was relieved from command of the UN forces Korea in the April of nineteen fifty one and I found a very interesting reference on wikipedia concerning an operation that %HESITATION he had green lighted %HESITATION to %HESITATION trying to spark a wider war with China and you know you're not supposed to pay attention were site wikipedia as a sole source so7/31
I immediately went and checked the standard biographies of macarthur and there was absolutely nothing in it in them about %HESITATION the %HESITATION macarthur mission and that sent me on a search through the internet and then through %HESITATION Korean War veterans groups and I was able to come into contact with the people who had been participants in the secret mission and they were able to give me8/31
the backstory on it and it's a it's a really unknown secret chapter of the U. S. a history of %HESITATION the twentieth century %HESITATION which shed these veterans have been able to %HESITATION bring to light Peter can you tell us more about who was in the film and what role that they play in the of the secret mission well one of my a key sources was9/31
a navy veteran during the Korean War Tracy Winslow served on the U. S. S. John a bowl as the main propulsion officer with the rank of lieutenant junior grade and later as the engineer officer with the rank of lieutenant no charge unable arrived in Korean waters in early November of nineteen fifty joining task force seventy seven and the John Abel was at the center of the10/31
macarthur conspiracy to spark a wider war I was able to track down that Tracy and good Traci graciously agreed to appear in the documentary he's also an amateur historian and and he has spent years digging into the background of the mission %HESITATION while he was on the ball and for decades afterwards he didn't %HESITATION pursue the issue because it was classified but then after the mission11/31
was declassified and %HESITATION in the %HESITATION nineteen nineties he pursued it avidly and I'm very happy that we're able to share %HESITATION his recollections and also his findings in the documentary what were some of the challenges that you face while producing this documentary since its mission to been classified and that it had not been the subject of a formalist org lingering there was a lot of12/31
digging that needed to be done both in the archives of the U. S. state department and also the archives of the British foreign office in in London anda so I had to track down those so documents in order to document the %HESITATION various claims that were being made about the mission of the John able and the context of four macarthur's the project to widen the war13/31
with China so Peter in your opinion what makes this film unique special why should be tune into this well I think that the mission of the John a bull is one of the most important secret chapters in the history of the United States in the twentieth century %HESITATION it represented a major inflection point in American security policy in Asia and it's one that has been virtually14/31
unreported and does it it's especially relevant to bring it to light now when the %HESITATION the United States is deeply engaged in age Asia deeply committed to confronting China and also will be worse experiencing a new crisis over the Korean peninsula well one thing that %HESITATION have been buried for a long time was the opinion of a lot of %HESITATION China hawks that macarthur was right15/31
and nineteen fifty one was at the time to widen the war into China to confront the people's Republic of China and bring down the Chinese Communist Party there are people in the Pentagon today where the similar mindset %HESITATION feeling is that we're now did inflection point are approaching one and within the tent within ten years if we don't do something about China we're not going to16/31
be able to withstand the militarily in the United States will have to cede leadership in Asia to the people's Republic of China so the people who think like macarthur and the only question is are there people still in the U. S. government who could stop them like macarthur was stopped by Truman in nineteen fifty one appear you pretty much answered my next question which was gonna17/31
be tell us how does this film in the historical events that happened back in nineteen fifty one relate to today's events and what's going on and it certainly appears that it does so if you had the list some key words to describe the film what would they be well %HESITATION the the key words a lot of emeriti in the title Douglas McArthur Korean War conspiracy conspiracy18/31
to widen the war with the people's Republic of China the U. S. as John a bowl which is the destroyer that was at the center of the macarthur conspiracy and you know World War three because we were %HESITATION %HESITATION we're coming close to World War three with the %HESITATION macarthur provocation at the time there was real concern that if the %HESITATION U. S. was successful in19/31
that involving a China in a Asian theater war that the Soviet Union would intervene on the side of the Chinese and that not only meant in China but also attacking an idea US bases in Japan it really was a great film Peter I at you know obviously I wasn't around in the fifties and so a lot of this information was new to me and I had20/31
no idea and and being that this information was classified in there was a secret mission that took place even people on board the ship %HESITATION were sworn to secrecy in and threatened with arrest %HESITATION if they even spoke about the events that took place that day so I'm so glad that you shared some light on this and expose this %HESITATION I'm really looking forward to actually21/31
%HESITATION watching it again in depth any any final thoughts yeah I got a couple actually I'd of course love for people to up by the documentary stream the documentary watch the documentary there so one other thing I'd like to reiterate that is that this was an enormous operation %HESITATION macarthur scented USS John a bowl down to %HESITATION that provoke China buddy the Johnny bull was part22/31
of a task force of fourteen ships there were thousands of men officers throughout the chain of command and civilians in Japan in Washington who were involved in this operation and a knowledge of it and that's just the American side they're also people on the British and Chinese sides way thing have recollections to share so at the end of the film we ask both direct participants and23/31
friends and family members to contact us to share their stories about the nineteen fifty one incident that involved John able and news but is set up a special email address out for people to work contact us and %HESITATION tell us their stories and if we can now get the stories I just wanna will emphasize that all these communications will be kept confidential and will not be24/31
shared a reference without prior up written permission from the people loose on the man Peter one final question why is it taking over sixty years for the story to come out a few reasons I think Spiro first of course the mission was classified and %HESITATION many of the participants found that feel duty bound %HESITATION to %HESITATION keep the S. secrets even long after the %HESITATION mission25/31
of been completed and even after the mission was to classified it presented special problems for historians because one of the characteristics of the mission was that from the first involved falsified records for instance on the Johnny bowl it'd been pre arranged that of the deck logs that recorded the up position and move of the ship would be falsified and there was no accurate record of what26/31
actually occurred second the reason I think is more of a %HESITATION political reason for the sake of civilian control of the military it was really not desirable to advertise that macarthur had abused or perhaps exploited his command authority to the extent that he was able to send fourteen ships to the Taiwan Strait to gin up a China war clearly certainly many offices in the U. S.27/31
Asian fleet were involved I would also not be surprised if the dish in the joint chiefs of staff knew what was going on and either condoned it or look the other way %HESITATION exposing this operation would have damaged or dented a lot of important careers in the U. S. military and in the U. S. government and I don't think that there was any incentive bad to28/31
really dig to the bottom of this so the story remained very simple macarthur was insubordinate you got relief for insubordination everything else was bygones and everybody went on their way but now finally we are getting a more complete story of what happened in that eighteen fifty one and why macarthur had to be released in a final note I'd also like to express my special thanks to29/31
the veterans of the John a bowl in particular need cheap propulsive officer on the ball in nineteen fifty one for his recollections and is working day you're out the story I'd also like to thank Sam stock who was the US surface radar operator in the combat intelligence center of the bowl and provided critical testimony which is also in the DVD and the the John able association30/31
both veterans is also been very cooperative and %HESITATION very %HESITATION generous with their time and their photos in assisting the preparation of the documentary join news but and crew members from the U. S. S. bowl as they uncover one of the most important secret chapters of U. S. history the conspiracy to cover up in the covert mission led by a rogue U. S. general to start
