I was just gonna say that while watching all these presentations they kept realizing everything that is wrong with my presentation %HESITATION but hopefully will collide right there and so how everybody %HESITATION I'm gonna talk about a completely different topic to wouldn't have been discussed today and have very old school power point to go with it so %HESITATION emerges fake news and media literacy %HESITATION it's a
topic that has been discussed online offline everywhere recently very very much %HESITATION mostly because of the political situation in the United States but it's been topics that have covered globally near and far what is happening today %HESITATION here you can see the same message %HESITATION placed and three completely different languages and yes they're all languages and what that messages is that communication is creation for ages
people have been written using written text communicate with each other over who was here a glove fix whether that and Chinese text %HESITATION or demo Jeez that's a topic for a completely different type talk but yes linguists have agreed that emoji saw her form of language and I agree with them because it's basically the way we used to okay our motion %HESITATION so much more so
in the air of stickers that are to a next level but for years and years and years first people just used to hand write to and then along came the internet and computers and everything associated with that on this graph which has no Marie's you can feed the internet usage has increased dramatically over time %HESITATION some basic stats internet active population %HESITATION predominantly in developed countries
currently but we're seeing a trend also developing because trees a more and more people are online we all know that %HESITATION why is this important we're getting to that but %HESITATION the internet usage currently today is important because it's mostly and countries that are shaping the cultural and political landscape globally and the men take away from this is that the way we talk to each other
today whether online or offline is literally creating our environment the way we spread information we receive information then shapes our surroundings and we can see more and more it's been spoken about %HESITATION as well text messages video social media I mean the amount of apps out there is hard to keep up with the times and it is very relevant because there are about two point five
billion people who use at least one messenger up and these figures are predicted to increase more and more %HESITATION just as the kind of side note %HESITATION the fact that this kind of influx of information that's happening online %HESITATION is relevant is because people no longer know how to react to it kind of written messages I or hand written messages I Hadda ensigns where I was
writing a letter couple months ago and %HESITATION every but every single person who I told about the fact that I was handwriting a letter what are you doing your handwriting a letter to someone like what is the for nineteen eighties or the seventeen hundred so but you try it sometimes because they're actually do get as surprising appreciated %HESITATION but yes the communication happens incredibly quickly and
it's an attack on our so called system one which is %HESITATION if you I highly recommend reading Daniel come and spoke thinking fast and slow where it talks about two different ways that humans can take information and system one is the kind of snap snap it's what you guys are all doing right now and talking to you and your in taking information very quickly but the
access and the amount of this information that's currently attacking the system is growing and growing constantly so why is all this important %HESITATION human perception is inherently flawed %HESITATION the way we perceive things the way we understand things %HESITATION we have all of us have a huge set of so called cognitive biases but impair the way we receive information %HESITATION we fail to take into account
complexity of issues %HESITATION we base our idea of the world on usually a very small unrepresentative set of observations that we experience %HESITATION we fail to take on the role of chance I mean I could go on and on about these things but there are a lot of failures that we as humans do and the way we perceive things around us at the same time it's
a biological function for us to a question life what is the meaning of all of this if we don't do those sweet one place hoping things such as god better harvest back in the day science technology the pursuit of happiness things like this and simultaneously wouldn't have such a will to survive and this is where the good stuff entered so conspiracy theorists he's faking news disinformation
this kind of recent trend of %HESITATION essentially under real data in our information systems is only because it's taking advantage of exactly these things it's an overwhelming amount of things that are systems just aren't yet prime to process and what it basically boils down to is that the freedom of speech today also means the freedom to lie down in liberal democracies it's one of the main
building blocks is that everybody has the right to say anything they want just like I'm singing here giving this to talk anybody could come up here and say whatever they like but at the same time that means that they could just as easily and freely lie there is no penalty against lying except some kind of moral social conduct which as we all know not everybody adheres
to suppose what is faking news really about %HESITATION it's alternative fact one of my favorite phrases as of recent %HESITATION which was coined by lovely lady over here Killian calmly but looks like a political so factor nine opinions and essentially vice versa and the concept of truth will always be inherently relatives because you can I mean that's point of debate we can talk about later but
%HESITATION every single person has a different way of looking at a certain issue so whether that person's opinion is true or not again matter of debate but what is not relative artifact and but is or should be indisputable and it's what then happens is that if a lot of people have the right to talk and talk freely and spread information and there's kind of no side
penalty to lying essentially that you take really good care of so called informational forests it becomes increasingly easier to strike a match and subtle thing on fire which is what we're seeing happening today people are overwhelmed by the amount of everything interesting out there and see quick and easy ways to get out we've seen this in the biggest hoaxes and fake noose %HESITATION problems of the
past year which %HESITATION was about our past your past years Obama's birth certificate so called pizza gate where the Clintons were this is very American centric I'm just really %HESITATION pizza gay where the Clintons are blamed of essentially being part of a human trafficking scam and Maureen why but they're actually people making money online thousands of dollars %HESITATION making money online don't just writing things that
are completely made up and true and untrue at this concept isn't new it actually comes from %HESITATION German title Kalugin place so from way back in the thirties we know where that led %HESITATION and it boils down to the tendency of people to trust and risks %HESITATION it's this concept of online hiding in the bushes in the Savannah it pays off if somebody told you there
was a line there it pays off for you to trust at least a little bit the fact that it's there because what if it really is there and you at least find measures to protect yourself and but when this becomes a problem is when these kinds of pieces of information are spread about really important topics such as religion politics health conspiracies essentially create the illusion that
everything is possible when debatable but I don't think so and what are the implications of all of this so we base our decisions on information that we have available to us and consuming information that is poor quality and that is simply untrue means actually it and look logically that we formed poor and bad decisions lack of objective information on very important topics such as migration gun
control policy religion to Liz condemned the environment the list could go on that leads to poor decisions about all of these topics which has huge implications for society in general and set essentially what it boils down to the rise of extreme opinions leads to extreme behavior so when people start to see more and more information that is untrue they base their opinions off of that it's
kind of a self fulfilling site so what we can all do about but %HESITATION we have to essentially be more aware of how we consume the media how we consume information and how we create that information ourselves I call it kind of a fast food fast wind but that's only because I'm of one lover of stuff life in the fast media lifestyle where everything needs to
happen really quickly you everybody's trying to do a million things at once and even though that is and as wave I inevitable I mean you're forced to make quick decisions all the time you can train yourself to make quick good decisions as well we each possess a set of personal biases and we all should do the effort to know what those biases are we all come
from a different place different environment a different upbringing language barriers exciter are you all should kind of take a moment and think about what those are for you and how they shaped the way you see the world access to more information doesn't necessarily mean that it's better information or that it's creating a better reality for everyone around you and kind of an obvious statement but the
internet has brought in everybody's horizons and not only that but it still remains up to you the kind of relates to the idea of Paul that was talking about asymmetry of information heat still up to you to kind of sift through all of that that's available to you I'll skip fans yep so I essentially a kind of went through all that was pulling in my mind
and what it came down to me for is that I suffered this problem myself incredibly %HESITATION I'm going to be twenty five this year and it's not I haven't had it proven by shrank but I'm pretty sure I've had like three burns it brings out in like the past three years and it's just because of the amount of things that you have to and take on
a daily basis once you get a job once you have to deal with relationships I mean the list could go on it's a lot to take in so what can everybody due to a kind of make themselves healthy and make their environment healthy in this day and age of incredible influx of information I mean just sitting here today going through all the presentations some of the
things are completely mind boggling to me and I know that I'm gonna spent like two hours googling all this when I get home %HESITATION but and that's great but the same time it can be difficult sometimes so what can we do number one and this is done said already keep asking questions everybody you meet as questions everyone has a different story a different opinion the moment
you feel like you know something four hundred percent votes Michael at the beginning of the end nobody ever really knows something a hundred percent so stay curious curious people are more likely to change their opinions and not fall into this pitfall an idea that what they say is true stay mindful of physically and mentally this concept of mindfulness spin very popular lately but it's for a
reason because when mindfulness essentially relates to this idea of taking your time when not being too quick to make any decisions or any kind of thought process the third point and this is if extremely relevant and the setting is that schools and educational institutions I think really need to start implementing something what I'd call media in online literacy programs %HESITATION I recently stumbled across this quote
but strands been translated but it was from the ministry of education the Czech Republic and she basically said that %HESITATION media and online literacy programs are just unnecessary and it's that is a terrible statements to make from somebody coming of that position because we can clearly see that %HESITATION this is relevant and if start like with anything when %HESITATION we were talking upstairs in the speaker's
lunch that it's incredibly important educate people to train them from a very early age to kind of SBI aware of the way the world works and this is becoming increasing part of the way the world works the fourth point is embrace your vulnerabilities so don't be afraid to admit to the fact that you may not know something that's gonna you may not understand something that something
makes you angry or whatever that processes just embrace that and try to deal with the trash talk to people about it it's not always easy but if you stay kind of sheltered and whatever emotional state that's going within you it'll be a lot more difficult for other people to understand you for you to understand other people and then the way you and take that information is
going to be completely different kind of her related topic but it's a fan again boiling down internalize the fact that everyone is different different set of background different set of skills exedra be tolerant towards others unlike other practical point %HESITATION online activism so there's been a lot of %HESITATION I mean basically points being done and a lot of activities being taken in this regard such as
fighting fake news %HESITATION sift mindfully through information it doesn't boil down to just cited citing something these days especially if you're doing work paper we all know what that's like but it's no longer I think enough to just look peso Lincoln you know you have got to the primary source know where it's coming from %HESITATION it takes time yes it's cruel some but at the end
of the day I think it's worth it and also be aware of what you post on social media I mean this has come to bite me in the but multiple times because of %HESITATION I like I mentioned I am a wine aficionado and my content on social media has not always been the most sober and that has come to Hans mean trust me so be aware
%HESITATION that another thing is confirmation bias %HESITATION let it has been mentioned before which is great that social media that connects people with like minded interests but follow the other side as well the dark side whoever doesn't share your opinion because it's important to be aware of that as well if you just talk to the people who think the same way that you do and think
same things you do you're just gonna get caught up in this bubble and then it's going to be a lot more difficult for you to accept different opinions often activism is important to us so talk to people in real life don't just message I tell this to my siblings all the time %HESITATION expert and explain to people what you're doing and I think this applies to
anything and everything every kind of field scenario job if people understand how game design works will be a lot more likely to appreciate it if people understand how what I do people ask me all the time how you sell electricity and gas reliving what is that even mean so once I tried to explain to them being then understand that it's a topic that's actually relevant exedra
so be a lot more forthcoming if you share and actually take the time to explain to people how the your environment works they'll be a lot more likely to engage with you and less likely to make false from I was so much text so point eight %HESITATION support independent media content of course it's difficult to say these days with independent and what isn't but %HESITATION would
