nobody has been held accountable in any whistleblowing case that I have ever known in this country in the past 16 years doesn't matter what agency they are there to protect themselves and all the cards have been set in such a way that there is no chance you may win you know some kind of compensation and say well that was justice it's not that's what that's what2/20
I was saying saying I want to see accountability there a tremendous amount of fraud that the government just doesn't care about or there's something wrong with the criteria that they use them in justifying defining what it was some lower is and either way knowing none of the politicians seem to care so no of those things I probably wasted my time but in looking at my wife3/20
or my kids I know I did the right thing [Music] thank you for tuning in to this special edition of probable cause with Sibel Edmonds joining Sibel is dr. Timothy ferner who was an author and lecturer in political science and ethics his particular areas of interest concerns the role whistleblowers play in maintaining good governance and accountability in the US Department of Defense Tim recently retired from4/20
the US Air Force after 27 years on active duty tim has the distinction of being the first active military officer since the Civil War to successfully win a qui tam whistleblower lawsuit on behalf of the United States government hosting today's discussion is the founder and editor of news but calm Sibel Edmonds welcome Tim and I have to say this is a great honor to have you5/20
on with us today and I have to say I was shocked I shouldn't have been shocked knowing the track record of the US media I was surprised that I had not heard about your case I had not heard about you and your whistleblowing journey and the moment I read and then I went back and research your case I was I mean it was mind-blowing and I6/20
said we need to have you on the show and and talk about your case your experience your whistleblowing journey and then discuss of so many relevant topics not only relevant to whistleblowing but in terms of many misconceptions myths out there that there are these great channels there are these great entities set up in our country to take care of issues of whistleblowing and whistleblowers it doesn't7/20
exist it didn't exist when I blew the whistle and and we would like to hear from you about your experience you know I was I spent 27 years on active duty I have to flew 5000 hours including I flew test & Evaluation aircraft at the lot of Keith's skunk works the Air Force gave me a TSS GI and when I was with NATO I had a8/20
cosmic TSO Tamil I was pina which means I was capable of working with nuclear weapons and I was on the P R P program they spent a lot of money you know probably over 1.5 million dollars to give me all this training and to get me a security clearance yet when I went to them and said that there was a problem and people were stealing money9/20
from the taxpayers they didn't do anything in fact what they did was they made it seem like I was a disgruntled employee and I had no business reporting the fraud so that concerns me I did those interviews I got I started getting phone calls supposedly from Hickam Air Force Base the office finance office somebody that handles retirement and they were not kidding they weren't threatening but10/20
they were if you continue to talk about this you're jeopardizing your retirement no I would say in what way they would say well we could you know we could stop your retirement all together we could you know things could happen where he wouldn't get paid and then I had a couple of death threats when it first went public and they came via Skype and it came11/20
as unmask numbers and I lived way out in the country in New Zealand and we have our back because you know I joke and I said well if you can get past past my train doubt packets then this is a preview of a news but special report but Tim to clarify it for our viewers in this particular case your case you blew the whistle and it12/20
had to do with SAIC right and when you won the case so basically this was for the benefit of the taxpayers the Americans but also for the benefit benefit of the government because they are the ones who take what close to 70 percent 80 percent of that amount correct yeah why would they have problem with you because it seems like or it appears on the paper13/20
or at the first glance then basically you have done everything as pro-government and pro people so like in my case I was blowing the whistle on government itself and this was the particular government agency FBI even though a lot of those problems were caused because of what was being dictated to them even though it's not supposed to happen by the State Department anyway welcome to the14/20
State Department I think we have some interns in the back welcome good to see you in this exercise and transparency and democracy but in your case you actually help the government so why would they have problem with you I think as you get in my opinion as officers go up the chain they become senior officers there's an incentive to not do the right thing because there's15/20
a revolving door for the full one and a half hour special report is available exclusively for members at news but comm sign up today for full access or you can watch it now at news but Vimeo on demand you one of the things you brought up in your email in your initial email was that you were hoping this interview would be watched it would be listened16/20
to by other veterans by current active members of the you know United States military and that you would you would want them to know about the experience but you also have certain things that you wanted to communicate with them and even though our website is it's a subscription-based community based one of the things I said and we are going to do is this interview any veteran17/20
any member of the military who wants to watch this video we gonna provide them as news but complimentary full access not only to this video and all and I always had very soft spot I think it's justified for veterans and for the members of our armed forces because again of the hundreds 44 whistleblowers that I have for our organization I would say almost all of them18/20
our former or current military members tell them based on your experience the points that you think are very important for them to know and the things that are so discouraging how should they be dealt with or or or anything that you want to communicate a lot to mister they're basically the way the military treats whistleblowers it's kind of a s Sibel Edmonds stated news but is19/20
