Hey again I'm Jeff to resell and welcome to another edition of my task today US navy opens new information warfare center Toronto man charged with pretending to practice witchcraft and does the storm of digitized information contribute to the de evolution of mankind WNED WNED our first article today is published in the maritime executive on March thirtieth twenty seventeen and interestingly the author for the article is2/37
unspecified the headline reads U. S. navy opens new information warfare center the article talks about a recent announcement by rear admiral Matthew color about the creation of the U. S. naval information warfare development center in Norfolk Virginia Kohler says the facility has reached operational capability and will be fully running by April twenty nineteen Kohler says that the establishment of this center is quote a significant step3/37
forward for information warfare and navy war fighting he continues the center will deliver advanced information warfare training tactics techniques and procedures as well as information warfare tactics instructors above all it will be a place for innovation the article then goes on to give a brief overview of the techniques and tactics that fall within the umbrella of information warfare it says information warfare spans a broad range4/37
of defensive an offense of measures on the battlefield including electronic surveillance cyber warfare IT security assurance of information integrity disinformation psychological warfare and jamming this sentence is very telling I think in that it outlines not only defensive measures but also offense of measures that include disinformation in my opinion someone claiming to have the moral high ground in some sort of international conflict cannot also be practicing5/37
offense of campaigns of disinformation there's no situation that I can think of where purposely promoting it deception and lies can lead to friendship and cooperation the author of the article continues by framing the creation of this information warfare center as a response to what he calls quote Russian interference in the twenty sixteen presidential race now I'm sure many of you like me are skeptical of the6/37
claims of so called Russian interference in US elections given that the source of the claims comes from agencies whose credibility has been completely tarnished by their record of repeatedly Ryan and dis informing the public of the United States when examining international conflicts between state actors it's sometimes useful to use the analogy of personal conflicts between people so for example if I knew a person who had7/37
a continued record of telling me lies about things and that person suddenly accused some other person of lying I wouldn't be taking that clean that seriously because it's coming from somebody who I know has a record that is not credible and that's sort of how I feel about the FBI and the CIA making this claim of Russian interference because history documents in many cases of these8/37
agencies practicing the same type of interference both on foreign governments and on the American people on Thursday March thirtieth senator Richard Burr warned the Senate intelligence committee that quote our community has been a target of Russian information warfare propaganda and cyber campaigns and still is also testifying before the Senate intelligence committee as former FBI special agent Clint what's who testified that Russia attempted to interfere with9/37
the campaigns of presidential primary candidates who are perceived as hostile to Russian interests Pacific glee he refers to presidential candidate Marco Rubio who testified that his staffers computer accounts had been attacked by hackers with Russian IP addresses it seems clear to me that our government will not back away from this narrative that Russia somehow interfered or influenced twenty sixteen presidential election even if all the accusations10/37
of Russian interference in our elections turn out to be true that does not equate to the U. S. having some sort of moral high ground to go on the offense if in fighting a war of information I was lucky enough to be raised by parents who taught me many important lessons and one of those was that two wrongs don't make a right if a person in11/37
my life attacks me I of course have the right to defend myself from harm but their attack of me does not justify me going on the offensive to sabotage and destroy them in an act of vengeance because what that does is it creates an endless cycle of revenge and violence I believe that what is true on this personal scale is also true at the larger macro12/37
level of human society when you study war propaganda you see there always seeks to label the in group as the innocent and righteous victim were as it seeks to label the out group as the evil villain who must be destroyed what that does is it creates a mentality in our mind where vengeful actions of offense of warfare or somehow justified it often amazes me the ranks13/37
that our government will go to interfere with the success of other foreign governments using tactics which can in no way be considered defensive they'll even go so far as to research techniques that are laughed at by mainstream science in order to subvert and sabotage their enemies and that brings us to today's mind hack flashback today we flash back to August twenty sixth nineteen eighty three when14/37
US army captain Paul H. Smith is reassigned to a new division at the army installation fort Meade in Maryland his new assignment is to be trained as part of a remote viewing experiment into psychics spying against the Soviet Union at that time the operation was known as the in Scone center lane project but became re designated several times and eventually became known as project started the15/37
program initiated by the D. I a and performed in association with Stanford research institute was directed by how put off who is also a high level member of the church of Scientology the doctrine of the church of Scientology includes a believe that humans possess psychic powers Paul H. Smith was trained and supervised by ingo Swann also a high level Scientologists and originator of the remote viewing16/37
research at Stanford research institute in the nineteen seventies Paul Smith stayed with this unit practicing remote viewing experiments for seven years the project was reportedly close down in nineteen ninety five partially due to report by the American institute for research they came to a negative conclusions about the efficacy of these techniques for intelligence gathering despite this Paul H. Smith remains an advocate for the remote viewing17/37
technique and wrote about his experiences in the two thousand four book clean the enemies might I was not able to find any evidence that Paul Smith is in any way related to Scientology and I really wanna know what you all think about is Paul Smith being fooled by a Scientology disinformation campaign when I listen and watch his interviews he seems to me to be a person18/37
who has very positive intentions in his investigations of psychic phenomena although the scientific community has laughed out and ridiculed people in this field of research for a long time the military was very quick to adopt this as a strategy of warfare when they thought that it was a way to defeat the Soviet Union in my opinion there is no place for ridicule and character attacks within19/37
the fields of scientific discourse if Paul Smith's research is in some way lacking in scientific proof there's a way to move that conversation forward without alienating him as a researcher and that's it for today's mine tax flashback our next article published on March thirty first twenty seventeen individual journal is entitled Toronto psychic charged with pretending to practice witchcraft the story states that Toronto police have recently20/37
charged a thirty seven year old man named morali Mutiara Lou visiting from India with pretending to practice witchcraft the man advertising himself as an astrologer and psychic under the pseudonym master Rogov allegedly received a hundred and one thousand dollars from a Toronto man who sought treatment for his mentally ill daughter which although told the victim's father that she was possessed by evil spirits and conducting several21/37
suppose ID healing sessions to drive them out which also has been charged with the little known Canadian law enacted in eighteen ninety two this statute section three hundred sixty five in the Canada code of law prohibits fraudulently pretending to exercise witchcraft in order to defeat this charge under section three sixty five the defendant would have to demonstrate his psychic abilities to the court I imagine that22/37
that trial might make an interesting courtroom drama slash comedy however the article states that the charges of fraud over five thousand dollars and extortion are much more serious charges and also much easier to prove the police only have to prove that money was exchanged and that the alleged victim has not actually been cured this is simply the case of a con artist who preyed upon a23/37
desperate father seeking any option necessary to help his suffering daughter in some cases claimed Toronto police this section three sixty five law can be useful because some victims will not accept the fact that the power the accused said he has where she has is not real by using section three sixty five prosecutors can take the position that the person was only pretending to practice witchcraft without24/37
having to convince the victims that this power does not exist with this article told me was that even if someday humanity proves the existence of some sort of previously unknown powers of the human mind that will still not protect us from the risk of fraud there will always be people who lie and say that they're going to do something and then don't follow through and no25/37
amount of scientific research will change that while I think it's okay to be open minded to new possibilities and techniques it's also extremely important to do your due diligence when you trust somebody with your health or your financial stability our final article today was published in global research on March first twenty seventeen by John Stanton the article is entitled the digital storm blowing away the human26/37
mind the article begins with an excerpt from Paul really owes book the administration of peer the last paragraph states promoting progress means that we are always behind on the high speed internet on her Facebook profile on our email inbox they're always updates to be made we are the objects of daily masochism and under constant tension the author John Stanton compares our inundation with signals from TV27/37
computers and cell phones with a digital storm that models in damages the human mind and its thinking processes he continues to say that the reason the storm has engulfed so many people is that like an addictive drug it really wires are neural pathways with a new set of rewards and punishments the fact that we have instantaneous access to information gives our brain a shot of dopamine28/37
that we seek to repeat over and over Stanton also argues that there's a downside to this which he calls connection in security connection in security he says creates a fear of not being connected were being seen or taking part in the social scene is the fear of missing out on the daily online world in being MIA to comment on the latest incidental text image or sound29/37
to eliminate connection in security the brain creates an addiction that resembles the cocaine addicts frenzied search for more so Stanton argues that this new system of reward and punishment is actually transforming our brain and are human character in his opinion this is not a process of evolution but of de evolution Stanton argues that because our brain prioritizes the short term gain of the release of dopamine30/37
over the long term gains that could be achieved by pausing and reflecting that our social interactions have degraded to a point where they're no longer productive if there's anything I learned from the twenty sixteen election it's that American citizens are locked into a political discourse that inherently encourages them to alienate each other I think talking about addiction is a great way to come out this issue31/37
because addiction is something that all of us struggle with in some degree or in some form now some addictions are more stigmatized than others in society so often people with the more acceptable addictions look down on those with the more stigmatize addictions but in reality they are in denial of the fact that the same mechanism is at work within their own mind this reminded me of32/37
a quote from someone who I believe is one of the greatest contributors to the field of psychology in the twentieth century his name is Karl your it is nineteen fifty to work psychology and alchemy he said people will do anything no matter how absurd in order to avoid facing their own souls and I think in this quote and in his works Carl young speaks to pattern33/37
of addiction that we have as a society to external validation an interesting twenty ten scientific study bears out this point how the opinion of others affects our valuation of objects in the summary the study states this finding provides clear evidence that social influence mediates very basic value signals we as humans are constantly comparing ourselves to others and adjusting our opinion of what is and is not34/37
valuable based on the opinions of others and the internet gives us endless opportunity to do this well I think the internet and digitize technology has given us a great opportunity seek out knowledge that we could never of access before unfortunately it also gives us an opportunity to get our fix on this addiction that we have to comparing ourselves to others how can we have a discussion35/37
about addiction and technology that makes everyone feel included I think that one positive step we can take toward alleviating this feeling of alienation that we all have is to be really mindful of our words in our discussions and conversations with others and ask ourselves is what I'm about to say going to alienate this person and if the answer is yes is it still worked same that's36/37
