well I was %HESITATION %HESITATION one of four children my father was attached Anacostia Naval Air Station in Washington DC %HESITATION and I was born in forty three and %HESITATION he was at the Anacostia Naval Air Station on July of fifty two I remember this later because of a lot of reports and %HESITATION when I was young kid with my brothers and sisters %HESITATION this one particular
night %HESITATION it was in the summer it is very clear night there were any clouds in the sky and running lightning or anything like that and %HESITATION we live fairly close to the Potomac River and these lights came up the river they were like sparklers there were giants or amber wings there were kinda bluish collar and white collar and they floated over the trees were quietly
some of moving slow of some of the fast kind like soap bubbles but they weren't moving according to the window anything they want balloons that were later anything like that and this went on for about a half an hour and then we heard %HESITATION some kind of a horn and then all the sudden sabre jets %HESITATION were coming up the Potomac River chasing these things and
let go of some of my straight up and out of sight and then someone just went you know they they just laughed and I was out in your it we had a kitchen garden in the backyard and we had a a star planter with roses in it and I was always in those days you had to push along more and sharpen the blades Sears long market
didn't have gasoline lawn mowers that and I was out actually mowing the yard and trimming at the time and %HESITATION mice all these things I ran inside and got my brothers and sisters to come right out my grandmother was looking at some time with living with us at the time my father was going on your station duty doubt the Anacostia Naval Air Station another forget this
long eleven thing reminded me of this mostly was when I saw the movie close encounters the hair kinda stood up on the back of my neck because those little those little white balls that came through the the toll gates on the on the freeway reminded me exactly what what I saw school kid I alluded to these later %HESITATION with doctor Jesse Marcel junior my contact because
he was about the same age many little older when he saw the good part pieces sprawled across the back of the car these objects %HESITATION tied in with in later years when I began to read about the why over ninety two in Washington see and I put two and two together and I was there and saw those at that time %HESITATION from newspaper articles in Washington
Post New York times at that time life magazine had articles on that and I think that even have some pictures and %HESITATION when I was starting later in college I tried to look up some of this stuff and couldn't find it but I have some copies of some of these magazines and articles from my father in law who kept just about everything is boxes when I
whatever enlisted %HESITATION I went through classification in Norfolk Virginia and they sent me to the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt I spent time in boot camp of the Great Lakes Michigan and I'd spent a total of six and a half years in United States made it and I was honorably discharged in nineteen sixty seven when I was a petty officer time %HESITATION when I when
it first went into the service %HESITATION I picked up the USS Roosevelt in nineteen sixty two in Palermo Sicily a she was at anchor in Palermo Sicily and I came onboard as a radar operator others trained at all I division which is operations intelligence division but it took me a year to get on my classify clearance to work on %HESITATION certain radar and electronic countermeasure equipment
I was trained in Newport Rhode Island %HESITATION when the ship were put into bail New Jersey for some new equipment to come on board %HESITATION the Roosevelt which use as an experimental ship for stellation of new electronic equipment new types of radar electronic countermeasure %HESITATION you name it and also we had some other %HESITATION new type of aircraft come aboard the rosy %HESITATION my cruise book
is from nineteen sixty to nineteen sixty three and I had no a prior knowledge of anything about UFOs following the Roosevelt or anything else when I first came on board I was nineteen at the time I boarded the rosy and %HESITATION I spend half my first mid cruise on board and all of the second that cruise I extended this matter fact my active duty service several
months so I could come back with the ship my second lead cruise and %HESITATION when I went to OCS in Newport Rhode Island %HESITATION they train the single state of the art I radar equipment Russians were playing war games of their own %HESITATION they would kinda harass the flea and %HESITATION they would try flyovers the Saratoga was fly over to explain that impression their aircraft very
fast very high flying turbo aircraft they got like eight props on and they would do flyovers and they would monitor our electronic emissions to try to figure out what kind electronic warfare they could and I had the tech in fact I got a commendation for for detecting washing their our aircraft and commander Gibson at that time and so we were critically on watch for this on
my job was to be able to challenge I knew what commercial aircraft where I could check there is it friend or foe signals or stuff like that I knew about the tactics the Soviets use military aircraft would Soviet military aircraft would get into commercial air quarters and try to be masked by the I FF squawking back commercial aircraft you know I was on midwives %HESITATION during
my second med cruise and %HESITATION it was about %HESITATION sometime between midnight and two o'clock and I had a contact come on the radar scope this new radar that we had we had a spa fifteens repeater we've had spa aids and BG of actor guide replied aircraft on and I I could I know the difference between surface search radar hand air search radar there's differences in
polarity of the radio signal and things like this and how the waves come back all the stealth kinda stuff you know active and passive be electronic counter measures so I know the difference between a flock of geese or you know wave returns or %HESITATION false echoes %HESITATION even %HESITATION we could generate false signals part of my job is to generate false signals to midshipman to become
a border Roosevelt for training on radar equipment see if they could tell the difference between an internally false signal which generated an hour and a real signal on the radar scope and in fact this was the first thing that challenged me to check it out and you see him as to whether or not the contact that had on the scope was genuine because this was between
%HESITATION sixty five thousand feet and above and the strength of the signal was as strong as the surface contact on the water of an aircraft carrier this this contact was huge it was %HESITATION got my attention and the attention of others that Ron watched there were four enlisted on watching two officers at the time that this occurred arm we challenged it and check the %HESITATION the
codes out it was not commercial and then it began to move of fairly slowly at first and then very quickly %HESITATION it was doing better than a thousand knots the first the first time I picked it up it was hovering stationery that it was doing about a thousand knots then %HESITATION we contacted it was %HESITATION over five hundred miles away and that high up even the
horizon line is at eighteen miles on the earth %HESITATION when you have that high altitude you can detect of the aerial contacts at a much greater distance than of line of sight or UHF let's say communications and so anyway in this particular case %HESITATION it was showing up on high finding equipment never showing up on radar %HESITATION Leon CEO came and then he wanted know what
the heck was going on here and they looked at it ask what the hell was that you know and it got the attention of the captain at that time was captain Clark was my captain my commander was commander gets on time and %HESITATION and there were only going one person watching you see around and before I knew in the matter all fifteen minutes the ship was
being turned and to phantom twos %HESITATION were being prepared for launch well I kind of set of headphones and I'm on the spot here repeater now and I'm listening to communications between pilots and %HESITATION the CL flight ops and %HESITATION when you go to general quarters do the same thing and I was used to doing this because one of my jobs during general quarters with the
sit right next to the commander of our division and %HESITATION to listen to the cap aircraft my job was to log and all the tally hose and everything my job was this recognition there expert also to be able to identify different types of maybe ships foreign ships commercial ships maritime ships and aircraft not only %HESITATION electronically but visually be familiar with electronic fingerprint in any event
the the phantom two is going to afterburners and are they were about a hundred miles or so away from this contact internal the conical scan rate or the lock on and it went out spirit I can see the two fountains on my scope and this thing went down they flew around for about a ten minutes and then headed back to the ship now I understand this
is not normally they spot aircraft on the deck but they always keep out of the side ramp you can launch a three catapults on the Roosevelt you can want to fork catapults were at this time more %HESITATION a occupied with aircraft spotted on the deck in the launch the spending too softly the angle catapult and then they recover them %HESITATION and after they recover them %HESITATION
about thirty five minutes later after they land at five thirty five minutes later %HESITATION and everybody settle down this thing links back on again it's about twelve to fifteen miles from a ship hovering about thirty thousand feet it's clear night stars are out and look out so I can talk to him on my my headphones here everybody's connected your your air plotter your surface potter here
officer year flag plot the %HESITATION captain or whoever the officer the watch is up in the conning tower annoying aircraft Gary this is very serious business because what's so you have a lot of people involved in la safety factors involved and so it's not a normal thing just that far things up that quick and %HESITATION in any event they went out and the lookouts couldn't see
anything nobody could see anything but it was there on our radar scope it was not a false signal I never never saw anything %HESITATION I never left mine but all I could hear weather reports come in my headphones and then %HESITATION the thing that really startled me the most were was that %HESITATION after I got a break we get %HESITATION you know they're pretty pretty diligent
about this maybe even today is that you get breaks at least a ten minute break in every hour watch because they wanna keep you fine tune and so I went down the %HESITATION the coroner in for this time I first for the first time I saw two armed marines there two marines there the one that usually stands with the captain and they're outside the cinema they
won't let me in there and I had a clearance to be in and then I saw other officers there might never even seen before so something something like that something went out now the next morning a lot of the %HESITATION Dale's were down there talking about %HESITATION you know that weird operation that night what happened then of course I couldn't say anything I didn't say anything
because I was told by my sealed it and %HESITATION you know unless I was reminded of this when I saw the movie red October and the honor walks up and show some of the credentials and say this never happened my seal Tommy Jordan list you know what he got in law this never happened and I wasn't the only one there on watch that night so anybody
who who was there at that time knows knows what I'm talking about knows that's the truth %HESITATION but less than a dozen people knew what went on that night not ship at five thousand men %HESITATION then after that particular med cruise %HESITATION a few of us started talking about it and I later ran into a navy chief at the school up in OCS who told me
a story about when he was down in the carribean and they had a GQ and they're all operational readiness inspection with the ships and I saw this a large UFO come up out of the water and take off and he said that the movie theater this was based on that particular story that was part of navy records %HESITATION I've since contacted many of my shipmates because
we buy everything that's been going on with your clothes lately and %HESITATION which brings up some other subjects but which I'll get into in a minute but I've been in touch with Mr Chet presents gay who %HESITATION had been a tremendous help and had sent me some of the papers that I saw when I first got my clearance about reporting UFOs and things like this it
was called Jena standing orders of the day if you I detected anything how to report it who is primarily for radio operators so that's navy Intel okay Anna I yelled was flag plotter when and when the adult come on board six played music as its flagship or some other CEO I'm charges and so %HESITATION I don't take you know claims about UFOs very lightly %HESITATION and
%HESITATION it makes you kinda nervous when you have these things happen you know in your life and %HESITATION your little skittish about talking about with people because they they probably think you're Bassam bones off the wall but people cannot know what they themselves are yet to experience but this happened it was real and in this case %HESITATION the contact was not leaving any kind of a
heat signature was not leaving any kind of the trail it was not moving at a speed which was proportional to the normal antenna rotation rate given the contact said no coming back on the vector guy given the plot given the minutes I was making the fix is in thirty seconds %HESITATION this thing was moving ten fifteen miles in thirty seconds twenty miles than thirty miles than
forty miles than a hundred miles and in virtually are three and a half minutes to sing move in almost five hundred miles at and then moving from one out the two to another that would cause any normal pilot to blackout let's say I was very strange to me this was a real contact and this signal from his contact at that distance in that altitude was settling
back a signal as strong as a Roosevelt itself and Roosevelt was over a thousand feet long and it was a Lieutenant Commander whom I don't know very well he had been on board for a long he came over and asked you know what was up Jordan where you got in your logging says you don't need to put that in there it's basically just a monotony that
was highly regular highly irregular to say that I particularly in ship's logs a I did have the contact log in there and I started writing in UFO bloody plotline apply with the I FF return all procedures and Harry had all this stuff going on never another word about it and so it was not required anywhere on the ship as far as I know unless it's in
