so I'd ask you out %HESITATION if you're creative I've pretty good feeling that a lot of you would say no no I'm not creative and my answer to you would then be no you're wrong you are creative you're all creative in your own individual ways just in different ways but you all equally creative just of each other and a couple years back I work with some
kids and I came with a new mind type I'm gonna plenty today and I want all of you to leave today feeling that you've been empowered with with more creativity because some of you if I gave you ship paper and the task to create something interesting a lot of you would just go ahead and start folding anything or got me lizard or something and some of
you would stare for hours and hours and hours and then finally to sheepishly draw the flight I'm so ashamed %HESITATION so the key to the mind hack it's not think outside the box let's think inside the box so I would take a backup years to when I was in high school I see coaches %HESITATION I'll allow me to school team a little kids and %HESITATION they'll
be given a task like I give you guys a clock and I take that second hand off the clock now I want you to replace the second hand on the clock with something unique so go ahead think about it a lot of you might say something like owe it to pick a needle %HESITATION something of the same size and mention of an actual second hand you
know if you're really creative or not not not that clear but if you're if you're single or more outside the box maybe you'll say something like oh tooth brush a spoon you know something will be out there but how do we get that five point answer because reading these kids from a scale of one to five by being was paid one being the least creative and
I needed to get away to get my kids to give answers that were five plants is consistent every single time that I could just keep I can just keep on telling them O. okay guys think outside the box you know be different thing different I need to give them something that they could rely on every single time you know and what I did is I have
this kid start making a limitation for them selves I had them say okay so now you have to please second hand and now the figment has to be green and they'll start saying things like oh it's gonna be a dinosaur's tale or it's going to be out by the witches finger you know I said I said now let's make the second hand %HESITATION alive and now
they say things like Angelina Jolie's right leg bows now is that my day the back today like then do say things like I stick bug is the thing they derive all the sudden because they have a limitation we started thinking more creatively because they're using the limitation to fuel and make a guideline for them to reach them okay response it was filtering out the cliche was
filtering out the needle the to pick the twig with filtering out all of that and that really brings me to my point the box strategy which I which I which I now call it is %HESITATION being tidy is anyone think inside the box you one thing with limitation because we think with the limitation that limitation provides you %HESITATION a guideline to get to that great response
because what happens is that when you're looking at a place in a paper when you're given to much freedom to create the first thing that comes to mind is the most cliche statement with cliche idea the most both like trite thing you know and that's disgusting we don't want that we don't want that we want we want creative responses you want creative ideas because that's the
fuse everything and the way to get that is to not drown in a sea of possibilities it's to get on a boat and make him that both severe limitation so today like when you're thinking about ideas when you think about responses think with limitations just try that out it was bought strategy is not new we've seen this again and again we've seen in history with you
know are %HESITATION that a great example of the nineteen seventy %HESITATION we had ivy Apollo thirteen space mission and what happens is that we came story what happened is %HESITATION the assets rub their space there's list or but the moon they have to abort the mission and the reason is the carbon dioxide tanks around and the contact the tanks the two of them malfunctioned and the
replacement cartridges were square so it was really a case where they have to find a way to put a square peg into a round hole you know and they all had a couple hours on the car nothing was going to get socked in inside the cockpit and %HESITATION and that's what could die Bailey had couple hours so and here's doctor John Kennedy Space Center here in
Florida had to find a way to fit the square peg into a round a pole using nothing but the materials there are you know spaceship nothing but the materials that were already on the space ship was to create a limitation this case they created this this this side the square thing that that had led to the call the caller mailbox rate %HESITATION and they were not
able to come to the conclusion they would not be able to come to that new innovative idea using nothing but plastic bags in cardboard boxes inductee they're gonna be able to make the innovation if they had and how they create a limitation which was the limited amount of tools or limited supplies on the on the face got and because of that they're successful you have taught
me to back so the boxer you save lives it has and we see today we see today with you know social media had %HESITATION I mean I Twitter is a great example of the bus and you know action %HESITATION you're only allowed to hire forty characters the limited amount of space the hunter fornicators that you have in the create a limitation because I love the house
I was born you're only allowed to express your thoughts your ideas the news your opinions only the creative and a limited amount of space %HESITATION because of that people express their thoughts in new ways if not faced with as much as any blog you have to do in with creative way possible and that and Twitter S. forced users to be as creative as possibly can because
they get a leader in my face that's a great example of our strategy action and so like a celebrity back to the to the clock example it sounds kind of silly right I'm not I'm not gonna place the second hand on a clock at home with a giraffe right but that's just an example to get you started to think that the limitation will actually be due
to something really colorful out of the box you know and we should use the box tragedy in our work in our everyday life and I'm a medical student so I'll go ahead and apply it to medicine %HESITATION a couple years back I was in Nicaragua and I was doing a little bit of medical mission work there and it should not insult the privation of I realize
but there was just such an object lack of medical tools and diagnostic kits in just do the just the basic necessities that we have to care United States was not there and so the cradle limitation that case was we didn't have the same diagnostic tools and because of that people have invented really interesting things like this this is an ECG pad using pleasing but like cats
you know bye bye bye facing the Cree limitation which is the lack of the lack of medical supplies in developing nations %HESITATION medical students like in this case there is %HESITATION there is the press right you can receive them Robert Malcolm and couple of its students created a new method of creating %HESITATION ECG pads using nothing but little bottle caps you know and because of that
tree limitation which was the lack of materials with countries we have arrived to this new innovative way of making cheap medical supplies using nothing their cycle material for you know so I charge you all with the box ready place create limitations on yourself make the challenges the feet more challenging you know it sounds if I think of the difficult thing but if you think I really
